Robin…The Vampire Slayer

“Bottom line is, even if you see ’em coming, you’re not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what are we, helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can’t help that. It’s what you do afterwards that counts. That’s when you find out who you are.”

~ Joss Whedon – Buffer The Vampire Slayer TV Series

I woke up last Sunday morning from a nightmare of sorts. In this nightmare, my house was filled with vampires. In every room and around every corner, there were vampires. As soon as I slayed 1 vampire, another vampire would appear. I was like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. When I awoke, I felt exhausted and depleted. And the first words that came out of my mouth…

Cr*p…here comes the holiday season!

I’m sure you can relate. A season where we are suppose to be filled with joy and excitement but really deep down inside we are filled with tension and stress…augh!!!  Let’s be honest , it has taken me years to recover from my own childhood traumas around the holidays. I’m sure these are the same traumas that all families share…

  • The yelling and screaming matches
  • The disappointments
  • The missed expectations
  • The family member(s) who suffer from depression and mood swings

For the longest time I avoided the holidays with a passion…there was just too much drama. But over time I learned how to slay these holiday vampires by creating new heart-felt holiday traditions. I started with what made me happy….

Community, Connection, Conversation

And from that I have slowly introduced the following new traditions into the mix…

  • Friendsgiving (11/22)
  • Black Friday Paint and Pour (11/23)
  • New Years Community Fire (1/5/19)
  • Adult Easter Egg Hunt (TBD 2019)

Are you ready to start a new holiday tradition?

If you are in the area, stop by the Kent Emporium Thursday or Friday and spend some time with our community at Friendsgiving or the Paint and Pour (details below)…I would love to see you!

Are you ready to turn your dreams into reality?
Are you ready to SHINE?

Schedule a quick 15 minute discussion and we can discuss the next best step for you.

Embracing Flawsomeness

“Noboby is perfect, so get over the fear of being or doing everything perfectly. Set your flawsome self free!”

~Robin Rosenstiel

This has been the summer of letting go. Letting go of…

  • what work should look like
  • what my business should look like,
  • what life should look like,
  • what friendship should look like,
  • what love should look like,
  • what my house yard should look like, and especially…

What my house should look like!

Let’s face it…my beautiful 2nd floor is currently a train wreck! It always amazes me how much I learn from nature and especially cats. But this time it has been four kittens that wrecked havoc in my life and taught me to just let go and embrace my flawsomeness.

(adj.) an individual who embraces their “flaws” and knows they’re awesome regardless.

Good thing I’m losing my grip on wanting everything to look perfect, since the flags are marked outside the front of the Kent Emporium, and the flags are marked in back of the Kent Emporium, and no one seems to know what the plan is. Will the sidewalk be dug up? Will the back driveway be dug up? Who knows!

All I do know is that I’m having a Tribe Appreciation Party on August 25th, so expect it to be flawsome!

The details are below. Hope to see you there!

What do you need to let go of so that you can be flawsome?

Are you ready to let go of an old story and create a new story?

Based on my July reset, I’m limiting my August openings to 4 people.

Living In The Spiral

“The path isn’t a straight line; it’s a spiral.  You continually come back to things you thought you understood and see deeper truths.”

It’s official – I have survived what started out as Whac-A-Mole Week and turned into Manic May. So I won’t be needing that hot pink straight jacket or the sparkly helmet after all. Thank goodness!!! There were moments when I found myself starting to go down the slippery slope of beating myself up for allowing my calendar to get totally out of control (lets be honest – I have no one to blame but myself). But whenever I started down that path of self loathing, I would ask myself the following question:

What is the gift in this?

And this is what I discovered…

I have changed! When life throws me a curve ball I no longer drop my selfcare program.

Historically I was raised to put others’ needs before my own needs. It isn’t a good or bad approach to life as it does serve a purpose at times. For example: I was raised on a farm and even when I wasn’t feeling good, I was still required to feed the cattle every morning and night. This is just part of the farming work ethic. After I left the farm, I continued to follow this model which led me to not having firm boundaries, over committing, and thus finding myself worn out and exhausted. Over the years I have learned to say NO to over committing and reclaiming my boundaries, but sometimes life still throws me a curve ball. Personally I’m starting to think it is a test – and May was one of those “test” months for me.

Throughout May, I continued to:

  • Schedule massages
  • Meditate
  • Eat healthy
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Exercise daily
  • Attend personal and business coaching sessions
  • Make time for my tribe of friends
  • Make time for myself by relaxing and working on mandala art

I learned to stop being so rigid with myself and instead I learned to go with the flow and be flexible with my self-care approach.  So the next time you find yourself repeating an old spiral story, stop and pause and ask these questions:

Am I putting everyone’s needs before my own?
Do I put myself last when life throws me a curve ball?

Standing At The Crossroads

“Growth is uncomfortable because you’ve never been here before – you’ve never been this version of you. So give yourself a little grace & breathe through it.”

~Kristin Lohr

2017 was a big transitional year for myself and so many people that I have spoken to. Everyone had the same story….

Learning to let go

I had to let go of relationships, a company, and a lifestyle that no longer fit in order to make space for something new to come in. Letting things go without out knowing the bigger picture is rather scary (to say the least). Especially when we grew up in a culture where everyone wants to know your plan. And when people press you for the plan, you know in your heart….

I have no plan!

I didn’t realize how much baggage I let go of since 2006 and how many times I had stepped into the unknown, until a dear friend and I were discussing music this past week and I asked the question “What is your favorite song?” I was surprised when I received a technical response…”Depends on the key”. But then again, what do you expect when you ask a musician that question!!!!

So I found myself trying to pin down my own favorite song. As I went through my play list, I started to realize that every one of my favorite songs told a story of my own life and learning to let go and step into the unknown without a plan…

Comfortably Numb/Pink Floyd: 2006 – When I recognized that I was miserable and in denial about the life I had created.

Another Brick In The Wall/Pink Floyd: 2007 – When I decided I was “done” and moved to Canada!

Candy/Iggy Pop: 2008 – While living in Canada, rediscovering the healer within me after keeping it buried for 20 years. Plus I saw Iggy live in concert!

Human/The Killers: 2009 – While living in England, I learned to surrender to the unknown by putting my life into the hands of a Garim GPS system, plus realizing that life is an adventure. Nothing says adventure like learning to drive on the wrong side and encountering roundabouts ever couple of miles.

Hotel California/Eagles: 2010 – 2017 – Spending 7 years at my last employer! What can I say? Was this heaven or hell? Hmmmm……

Life Is A Highway/Tom Cochrane: 2017 – Stepping into the unknown of new beginnings of a new company, a new career, a new travel schedule, and a new office (working from home).

Roll Me Away/Bob Seger: January 2018 – I was walking through Hartford CT airport at 5am on a Saturday morning (on my way back home) and I spotted a crossroads sign in the airport. As I read the sign, I thought of Bob Seger’s song Roll Me Away…

I could go east. I could go west. It was all up to me to decide.

Since I saw that sign at the airport, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my healing crisis, where I should go next, and what I should do. And last night while attending an annual Wine and Chocolate Tasting event, I found myself having an in-depth discussion around healing and chakras. Midway through the discussion, my friend pointed out the animal totem picture hanging on the wall next to us.

Just then I saw a young hawk flying
And my soul began to rise
And pretty soon
My heart was singing

Who knew that standing at the crossroads and thinking of the song “Roll Me Away” would be the prelude for a sequence of events that unfolded throughout the month. Sometimes when you are at the crossroads, you just have to take a leap of faith and follow the signs. Stay tuned.

What choice would you make it you really believed in your dream?

What does your soul want to create?

Are you at a crossroads as you rewrite your story for 2018?

Are you ready to take a new direction?

Are you encountering a curve ball with your rewrite story of 2018? Or are you feeling stuck, anxious, fearful, or angry? My Circus and My Monkeys

“Some days your life is all about your dreams, hopes and visions for the future. But there are some days where life is just about putting one foot in front of the other…and that’s okay”

How has your week been going? Have you been having technical issues? Mysterious aches and pains? Do you feel like you are moving backwards and not getting anything done? Do you want to move forward and too many things are laying in your way? What has been slowing you down?

Just notice where you are today.
Just notice when you are trying to move in a way the energy does not want to move in.

I’ve been clenching my jaw this week. I’m not sure when I started doing this. I didn’t even realize I was doing this until I was in the middle of getting a massage today. Throughout the massage, I noticed that my body was full of knots (thank goodness I have a great massage therapist). When did all of this stress and tension start? I checked my calendar and my last massage was November 16th. So all this tension happened in the last month!

Welcome to a month of…

  • holiday festivities,
  • year-end business activities, plus
  • Mercury Retrograde thrown in just to make us feel like we are stuck in mud.

I led a mediation on Tuesday that spoke about the significance of this month. Mercury Retrograde is all about slowing down and surrendering to the space between.

We are between foot steps right now.

Do you feel out of balance? Are you feeling frustrated, exhausted, and defeated? Are you trying to push forward while the world around you is saying NO?

What old stories are coming up for you right now?

My old story is around time, control and deadlines. If this doesn’t get done now, other things will be impacted. How can I keep all of the balls in the air? If one ball drops, even more time will be wasted as I will have to juggle everything around. I feel like I’m a featured juggler of a traveling circus. And then it hit me…

That awful moment when you realize this IS your circus and those ARE your monkeys.

And this is the purpose of Mercury Retrograde. Mercury Retrograde always brings up something that is unconscious within you that you need to see now.

What if you could just accept where you are right now? The space between footsteps. What is it like to stop expecting yourself to arrive and accept the truth that you are exactly where you need to be.

You are in between realities. A temporary less stable reality. Because the new land is not known yet, this transition space has qualities of this new land that is unknown. We have expectations on ourselves that we should know this new land, even though we do not. We departed a territory that we where familiar with and now we are in unfamiliar territory. This unfamiliar territory is changing you and preparing you for the new land. You just are not there yet.

What if it was OK to be uncomfortable?

What if it was OK to use some of your energy to just notice the resources and energy required to be in the unknown?  To notice how you react to being in the known? What is needed to be in this transitional space in a healthy way? What does your heart need right now?

5 Minute Emotional Makeover

Purpose:  To change the old never-ending story that is playing in your head.

Here are 4 simple steps to help you change the story…

  1. Describe it. Describe what is going on in your body. Example: My jaw is clenching and aches with tension.
  2. Name it. Describe what you are feeling. Example: I’m feeling under pressure to get it all done.
  3. Find the sentence. Find the sentence that is causing the emotion. Example: It’s almost year-end and I’m feeling pressure that I won’t get everything done.
  4. Change it. Change the sentence. Example: I am fully supported and can ask for help. If I don’t make a deadline, the world will not end.

Running On Empty

“You have to calendar time for yourself

even if you have no idea what you’re going to do with it.”

~Susie Bright

This week I have spent the full week in off-site business meetings (8am – 8pm). This is the first time my calendar has been over booked this way since 1Q2017. The meetings this week reminded me of what my life looked like prior to 2017 and how I never intent to return to this type of over scheduling on a consistent basis going forward.  What made me decide to change my calendar and my life?

A Photo

Last year at this time I participated in a Mentor Masterclass Holiday 24 Day Challenge. The purpose of this challenge was to start the New Year with new rituals, intention, & soulful purpose. Each day I would receive an email with a video story and a challenge. My biggest AHA moment from this challenge was around my calendar. As part of the challenge I was to take a photo of a typical day on my calendar and post it on Instagram.

OMG – I never realized how crazy my calendar looked until I saw a photo of it.

I was scheduled from 7am to 6pm daily with work meetings (including working lunches), plus my own self-care program scheduled in the early am hours followed by my coaching business in the evenings. That photo showed how crazy my calendar looked (booked from 5am – 9pm daily) and explained why I felt depleted, stressed, frustrated, and pulled in every direction. There was literally….

What is WHITE SPACE? Time where you’re scheduled to go absolutely nowhere, do absolutely nothing, and see absolutely no one. Because of that photo, I made a choice and I set a 2017 objective to create WHITE SPACE in my calendar daily.
Today I’m proud to say that my calendar is 100% different than what it looked like before 2017. What changed? I learned to take 4 simple steps (details below)…

  • Block out my calendar for Me Breaks during the day;
  • Ask the question “Is this value added work or non-value added filler work?”
  • Say NO!;
  • Stop being an over achieving people pleaser;

Creating White Space:

Purpose: Rejuvenate yourself by scheduling time to go absolutely nowhere, do absolutely nothing, and see absolutely no one.

Here are 4 simple steps to help you create more white space in your days…

1. Stop and take a hard look at your calendar. How much space and time do you allow yourself in between meetings and time frames within your day? If you find yourself going from one thing to the next, with no breathing room in between items, focus on more planning time with your calendar. Giving yourself even a few minutes of breathing room can make a huge impact on your performance and in your day.

2. Don’t say “yes” to everything, or at a minimum say “not right now.” White space doesn’t just happen – you have to create it and schedule it.
3. Leave time at the end of your day for planning and clean-up. This must be SCHEDULED time – consider it your most important appointment of the day and make it a priority every single day. Use this time to re-cap the day, clean up your desk, empty that email box and, most importantly, plan for the next day. This way, you get to leave work at work and focus on the things and people in your life during your off-hours.

4. Let go of the feelings that you have to get it all done right now! This frenetic way of thinking is perpetuated in our society and it’s very counterproductive. We all look very busy and important making calls, hurrying off to meetings, ticking off item after item that needs to be done to get through the day. Although your appointments, meetings and tasks are all very important, keep in mind the mantra that if EVERYTHING is important, then NOTHING is important!

A Visit From Judge Judy

“Success comes from curiosity, concentration, perseverance and self-criticism.”

~Albert Einstein

For the past two weeks I have been working feverishly on my business plan for the Fish Tank competition. Prior to sitting down and creating the business plan (which is due mid October), I decided to spend the summer testing out various ideas, seeing what felt right, determining what worked and what did not work. Any one that know me well, knows I’m a…

BOOTS ON THE GROUND type of person.

Meaning…I can dream up crazy stuff just as well as the next person, but if there is no way to turn the ideas into reality…it just isn’t happening. Needless to say I ended the summer with a folder stuffed full of thoughts and ideas. As I started to sort through the piles of paper and assemble everything into the business plan package, my favorite critic showed up. My critics’ name:

Judge Judy

She started filling my head with my favorite negative thoughts:

  • “I can’t do this!”
  •  “I’m an idiot to think this will actually work!”
  • “I don’t have enough time to get this done!”
  • “I will fail!”
  • “I will never make money doing this.”

Imagine trying to complete a business plan with those thoughts running around in your head! Needless to say – that is why I never got around to writing my blog last week. I was spending the week battling Judge Judy and her negative self-criticism. And she is one tough cookie! I often believe that this is the #1 reason why peoples’ ideas and dreams never become a reality…

Negative Self-Criticism

So how did I get through this negative self talk? The first week I focused on recognizing the negative self talk and taking Action #1 to stop the thoughts dead in their tracks.
ACTION #1: Traditionally I’ve been told to wear a rubber band around my wrist and snap it every time I hear myself in a negative pattern. Personally I think that snapping a rubber band is just another form of personal abuse. So I have created my own technique.

  1. Start listening careful to your self talk.
  2. Each time you catch yourself in a negative pattern (I can’t, I never, etc), pair 2 foods together that sound disgusting together. I don’t eat the food, I just imagine paring the 2 foods together and what it would taste like. Examples: Peanut Butter and Pickles. Fluff and Lemons.
  3. Notice how your brain reacts. My brain stops the negative self talk immediately and goes directly to “WHAT?!?!?” mode. I can seriously feel the circuits remapping themselves in my head every time I do this. It is really rather funny. OK…you can laugh now! But seriously – try it sometime.

The second week, I moved onto Action #2.

ACTION #2: Let your inner critic have her/his 5 minutes of fame. I let Judge Judy get on her soap box once a day. I heard stories of…

  • How I will Fail…
  • How I will look Stupid…
  • How I won’t get it completed in time…

My responses:

  • Yup – I’ve failed before and got that t-shirt!
  • Yup – This would not be the first time I looked stupid!
  • Yup – but at least I will try my best. and if I don’t complete it in time, I will continue to work on it until it is finished. Because this is not about the competition but about me and this business succeeding on my terms.

After Judge Judy’s 5 minutes of ranting and raving, I state:

“I’m done now!
“I really need to get back to working on this business plan!”

It’s amazing how these 2 actions have helped me to get through my own negative self-talk and move forward with creating my business plan. Granted, there where moments of kicking and screaming, but I continued to move forward.  So the next time your find yourself in negative self talk mode, try using these 2 actions in order to break the cycle of negative self talk.

When does your self-critic show up for a visit?
How do you react? Do you bury your head in the sand or to push through it?

I create space for you to listen to your heart and take your next inspired step!

Time Warps, Mercury Retrograde, and Eclipses…Oh My

“I’m not going to live by their rules anymore!”

~Bill Murray – Groundhog Day

I don’t know about you, but for the past several weeks I feel like I’ve been living in a time warp and it is looking a lot like…

Groundhog Day

And just like in the movie, the same stories and scenes kept playing out again and again and again. For a while I thought it was only me noticing this. However as I spoke to several dear friends this week who live in different parts of the US, I realized that they too had observed the same thing…

with friends, with family, and with the country.

And it appears that time warps are the energy and theme of this month’s Mercury Retrograde and Eclipses. I’m not going to go into details about what a Mercury Retrograde is, however I have attached a link if you want more detail.

Instead I’m going to tell you how this energy showed up in my own life last week in hopes that it will shed some light on your situation (because I don’t want you to think that you are going crazy alone).

  • Wednesday; Family drama
  • Thursday: Family drama
  • Friday: Family drama

I’m sure you get the picture. Growing up in my family, I was tagged with the roles of:

Peacekeeper and the Fixer

Whenever a family drama occurred, I was called in to appease everyone and to fix the issue. Needless to say the tactic worked well when I was a child (survival tactic), however as an adult, this family role has continually stopped me from moving forward with my own dreams. I would be moving forward with my dreams and suddenly out of nowhere a family drama would occur, I would be called in as the peacekeeper and the fixer, and as a result I would put my dreams aside.

What has this theme taught me over the course of the past few years, which is now being amplified…

My behavior wasn’t helping anyone, including me!

Instead my childhood behavior became a “dump and run” excuse for my family to not grow up and take responsibility for their own lives. Which would then lead me into my own “never-ending story” of self-doubt around my dream. So when I saw the family drama behavior repeat itself 3 days in a row with the expectation that I would drop everything and take the reins, I decided to end the Groundhog day scenario and take another course of action.
Instead, I developed strong boundaries, spoke my truth and I walked away.

I told the family member “I love you but…you are an adult, you put yourself into this situation, and therefore you can get yourself out of the situation.”

That night, I went to bed feeling bad, ashamed, and distraught for having to define such extreme boundaries, as I value the importance of family. But at what point does one say enough is enough regarding old family patterns and drama and just walk away?

Fast forward to 2am when I was awaken by a message. I got out of bed, wrote down the message, and went back to bed. I was awake for maybe 5 minutes before I went back to bed and slept soundly until 6am. When I got out of bed, the first thing I did was walk into the kitchen to read what I wrote down. I laughed, because this was the answer that had been eluding me.

“You can’t reason with crazy!”

Virtual Freedom Highway Road Trip

Here is where you can…
Redefine Yourself and Re-imagine Yourself

Prompt for the week:  The Tornado – an uncomfortable chaos surrounds you. Things that you’ve left unattended may be the cause of some conflict. Ask yourself…

  • Where is there a tornado in my life?
  • What is the tornado asking me to release?
  • Am I resisting the tornado? If so, why?
  • Remember….this too shall pass.

Please share your list on our private Facebook Group.

Pot Holes, Speed Bumps, and Detours

“On the road of life, you can’t get off the exit ramp without some bumps and roadblocks – and a few detours.”

This has been the year of pot holes, speed bumps, and detours. What do I mean by this? I start moving forward with creating a new life and business for myself and then something happens which makes me sit back and question myself and my decisions. Questioning my own decisions is one of my favorite pastimes (especially at 3am in the morning). However this year, the questioning has become a 24×7 activity as I move into uncharted territory (new company/new position, Kent Emporium/Fish Tank, coaching/web business, etc.).

What am I questioning?

  • Is this the road to freedom or a detour to just another version of the past?
  • Why am I going down this road? Maybe I should just stop and settle.
  • Why is this so hard? Others tell me how they make $20k monthly.
  • Why am I feeling so tired and overwhelmed? Maybe I’m not cut out for this.

Even Thursday morning, more pot holes and speed bumps appeared while I was at the Cincinnati airport. I forgot my cell phone at the ticket counter (pot hole – the result of a restless night of sleep). I get into the shortest x-ray line and as I put my luggage on the conveyor, the conveyor breaks down and I’m forced to merge into the other line where there is a new x-ray technician that is going as slow as molasses (speed bump). And then the kicker…as I get to the gate, I’m informed that the flight has been delayed by 2 hours due to weather in Chicago.

REALLY?!?!?!? REALLY?!?!??! REALLY?!?!?

A latte, a tea, and an oatmeal later, I board the airplane to Chicago. As I settle into my airplane seat, the pilot made an announcement…

“Due to bad weather in Chicago, we are going to take a 15 minute detour north over Grand Rapids, with the goal of missing the storm.”

And then it hit me.

Maybe pot holes, speed bumps, and detours are a good thing because they wake us up and stop us from going into an unnecessary storms!

The truth is, I’ve looking at this topsy turvy year from the glass half-empty perspective. An old “never ending story of doom and gloom” that closely resembles the Chicken Little – Sky Is Falling story. As I stepped back and looked at the bigger picture, I realized that the sky is not falling, but getting bigger. I’m learning new things which are taking me outside of my comfort zone and as a result I’m stretching and growing. These pot holes, speed bumps, and detours are not here to sabotage and derail me, but to actually remove the baggage and the limiting beliefs that are holding me back from taking the next step.
