Misadventures On the Island of Fruits and Nuts

“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might just find, you get what you need.”

~Rolling Stones

In January, I went to Costa Rica to learn more about plant medicine and permaculture, but in the end I didn’t really learn anything about plant medicine or permaculture. Instead I discovered:

Magic: Friday – I discovered a carved face of a jaguar next to a waterfall while walking in a forest. No one from the resort had every seen it before….and this carved faced was LARGE;

Trust: Saturday – I met a talented white river rafting guide who taught me the importance of using intuition to read the skill set/fear level of everyone so that the experience would be a fun adventure; Curiosity: Sunday – I arrived at the Permaculture resort ready to learn more about plant medicine and permaculture;

Connection: Monday – I connected with many people at the resort and with my plant spirit (lavender); Unique Genius: Tuesday – I discovered I’m awesome at holding space for others;

Surrender: Wednesday – I left the Permaculture resort in a small fishing boat. 10 people and 3 boar guides in a small fishing boat in the big Caribbean Sea with 6 foot waves, all you can do is surrender and pray you make it to shore;

Inspiration: Thursday – I went to a Wildlife Rescue Center and discovered that the owners moved to Costa Rica to retire, however the universe had different plans for them;

Perspective: Wednesday I was riding 6 ft waves in the Caribbean Sea, Friday night driving home from the airport, I was riding Northern Illinois snow drifts…go figure;

Have you ever went on a vacation or an adventure and had to throw your entire game plan away and instead watch the adventure unfold?

My Costa Rica trip was truly an awesome and insightful adventure. And over the course of the next few blogs I will share with you some of my insights and plot twists. This trip didn’t turn out as I planned, however it was exactly what I needed, and for that I’m grateful! Some how I think this is what 2019 is going to be all about….

Taking A Snow Month Break

“Snow Month Break = Follow nature’s rhythm and take some time to feed your soul by separating yourself from life’s frantic pace.”

~Robin Rosenstiel

At the end of 2017, while traveling for business, I was having severe sinus pain. As a result, I went to the store and purchased some herbal teas that are known for relieving sinus pain and pressure (as an FYI – I grew, harvested, and dried my own medicinal herbs for years and even have a herbology certificate – but I took a break from the herbology world since 2010). Fast forward to the spring of 2018…imagine my surprise when a plant medicine trip appeared in my email box. This trip had my name written all over it…

Raising Consciousness – Magical Plants in the Costa Rican Jungle

Funny – who would of guessed that the sinus pain at the end of 2017 was the beginning of my wake up call to return to plant medicine. So starting next week, I will be off to Punta Mona Costs Rica for 9 days to learn more about plant medicine and permaculture. Punta Mona is world known for it’s dedication to permaculture. As a result, I have decided to take the month of January off in regards to writing my blog so that I can follow this thread and see where this adventure leads.

My blogs will return on February 1st. So stay tuned and watch your email box who knows where this will lead. Earlier this week, my brother Todd was already pushing me to get a hemp license as hemp is now legal (2019 law) to grow in Illinois (and I’ve been wanting to grow this plant for years). And maybe the Kent Emporium will turn into an apothecary….hahahha. Regardless of what happens, it appears that 2019 will be a year of adventure!

Is a new adventure calling you in 2019?

Robin…The Vampire Slayer

“Bottom line is, even if you see ’em coming, you’re not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what are we, helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can’t help that. It’s what you do afterwards that counts. That’s when you find out who you are.”

~ Joss Whedon – Buffer The Vampire Slayer TV Series

I woke up last Sunday morning from a nightmare of sorts. In this nightmare, my house was filled with vampires. In every room and around every corner, there were vampires. As soon as I slayed 1 vampire, another vampire would appear. I was like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. When I awoke, I felt exhausted and depleted. And the first words that came out of my mouth…

Cr*p…here comes the holiday season!

I’m sure you can relate. A season where we are suppose to be filled with joy and excitement but really deep down inside we are filled with tension and stress…augh!!!  Let’s be honest , it has taken me years to recover from my own childhood traumas around the holidays. I’m sure these are the same traumas that all families share…

  • The yelling and screaming matches
  • The disappointments
  • The missed expectations
  • The family member(s) who suffer from depression and mood swings

For the longest time I avoided the holidays with a passion…there was just too much drama. But over time I learned how to slay these holiday vampires by creating new heart-felt holiday traditions. I started with what made me happy….

Community, Connection, Conversation

And from that I have slowly introduced the following new traditions into the mix…

  • Friendsgiving (11/22)
  • Black Friday Paint and Pour (11/23)
  • New Years Community Fire (1/5/19)
  • Adult Easter Egg Hunt (TBD 2019)

Are you ready to start a new holiday tradition?

If you are in the area, stop by the Kent Emporium Thursday or Friday and spend some time with our community at Friendsgiving or the Paint and Pour (details below)…I would love to see you!

Feeling Into Abundance

“Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into.”

~Wayne Dyer

This past weekend I continued on my quest to clean out the Kent Emporium. The cold, cloudy, wet, blustery Sunday set a beautiful backdrop for a day full of sorting, pitching, and organizing. And at the end of the day, I must admit, instead of feeling worn out and depleted, I felt energized and recharged. As I sat in bed, I started thinking about what I would like to fill this space with. So, I asked myself two questions…

What does abundance feel like? Spacious, timeless, effortless

As I cleaned and organized, time actually stood still. Not in a bad way, full of boredom and frustration, but in a great way – I had all of the time in the world to accomplish the task at hand without interruption. Every time I stopped to look at the clock I was in awe as to how much time remained in my day.

What does abundance look like?

  • Boxes of “oh so slightly used items” ready for a new homes
  • Empty space in my cupboards, my closets, and my calendar
  • Peaceful and at ease

Based on this past weekend and my responses to the 2 questions (above), I reflected on how my life had not felt like this and in reality my life had turned into a run away train over the summer. This past weekend showed me what…

I no longer want…A Go-Go-Go – Now-Now-Now Lifestyle

After a winter of stillness and I found myself (in May) suddenly being thrown into Go-Go-Go-Now-Now-Now mode. My calendar was suddenly overbooked and changing weekly. I’m sure as an outside looking in, this might look like a great problem to have, as it shows that I’m valued, needed and important. But in reality – what I learned…

When I get into Go-Go-Go Now-Now-Now mode, I stop listening to my heart and starting listening to my head.

I start chasing after the next shiny object thinking this is the solution that will solve everything but once I slow down. I realize my head likes to send me on wild goose chases and down dead end roads. So, over the course of the next several months, I’m getting off of the Go-Go-Go merry go-around and making more whitespace in my calendar as I create my new wealth story that is full of spaciousness, timelessness, and effortless ease.

How would your life change if abundance could be spacious, timeless, and effortless?
What does abundance look like to you?

Clearing Out The Closets

“Clutter is not just physical stuff. It’s old ideas, toxic relationships and bad habits. Clutter is anything that does not support your better self.”

~Eleanor Brownn

This past week I decided it was time to reclaim my second floor and remove Grace the mother cat, the 3 kittens, and all of their cat/kitten toys from the 2nd floor of the Kent Emporium.

As an FYI – there are still 3 “too cute for words” kittens available for adoption.

I’m always in awe when animals teach me about myself. For me, I have learned some of my best life lessons via cats. This summer, Grace the mother cat, and her kittens taught me a lot about what I was not seeing in my life.

The clutter I was hiding in the closets.

This clutter wasn’t just physical stuff, but also bad habits, and old beliefs. As I started to review the items in my closet, I wondered how this happened.

How did my closets get so out of control?

As I started to review the items in my closets, I realized I had the bad habit of throwing items into the closets during remodeling projects. And instead of getting rid of the items while remodeling, I would just throw the items into the closets with the game plan of addressing them at a later date.

So last week I decided to tackle my closets. As I removed items I no longer used or wanted and put them into the donation boxes, I started criticizing myself for wasting my most valuable resource (time). Why didn’t I simply donate these items during the remodeling projects? I started to go down the judgmental path of calling myself lazy and for letting this situation get so out of control. When I caught myself in the self-criticism and judgement story, I stopped and asked myself…Is that true? Am I really lazy? Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m not lazy. So I started to ask myself …

What core belief am I carrying around? What is holding me back?

I started to think about my father and his love for holding onto everything. Even if something was worn out or broken, he would still hold onto it (and the farm barns reflected it – as it took my mother 1 year to clean up everything after his death). My mind then shifted and I started thinking about my last employer (agriculture) and how, with every line rebalancing/restructuring/remodeling, the plant would send racks, equipment, and various other items to the “Bone Yard”. Basically the company closet, where items are hidden away from plain sight so that the visitors would not see them. And every plant did this and when you asked them why, the response was always the same…

You never know – money might be tight in the future and I might need these items to be resourceful

For the 7 years, while I worked at that company, I can honestly say that we were maybe able to reuse < 5% of the items. So even businesses had the same thought process as my father. So I asked myself the question…

Where did this belief come?

I could say it came from my father, but my father never worked at this agriculture company. So the belief was bigger then just a family quirk. I always remember my father talking about the Great Depression and how they grew their own food and how they had to hold onto every item out of…

Fear of never knowing if there would be enough.

So this is the real story of why I had closets full of stuff (and businesses have Bone Yards). I had a subconscious belief sitting in my closet. I didn’t even know I had this subconscious belief until 1 cat and 4 kittens showed it to me. The beauty of uncovering a subconscious belief is…
Once you see an unconscious belief, you can not un-see it!

So what did I do? I acknowledged the Great Depression story and how it became a part of my own belief system and how it served me in the past. As a result of that old cultural story, I was raised to be very resourceful and a great saver. However this belief had run its course and was no longer serving me. Saving stuff I was never going to use again was taking up valuable closet space. Plus holding onto this old belief was preventing me from investing my money more wisely (via feedback from my financial advisor). And most importantly, this old belief was preventing me from taking the next step forward in my own success by keeping my talents and gifts hidden (in the closet) so I would be safe and secure. What a great “surprise” moment to finally recognize that…

My closets were showing me a subconscious belief that was holding me back.

I could of criticized and judged myself for wasting years holding onto this old belief, but instead…

I simply let the old belief and myself off of the hook.

There was no blaming or shaming – or would or/could of/should of thoughts – I just simply let us both off of the hook with no strings attached. Because what is over, is over. Suddenly I felt a 100 pound weight being released from my shoulders. I didn’t realize that I had been dragging around a very heavy rod/reel/and a belief on the end of a hook, until I recognized it, named it, and released it by letting the belief and myself off of the hook.

What are your closets trying to telling you?
Are you ready to let an old belief off of the hook so you can move on and bring your gifts and talents into the world?

Pulling Back The Curtain

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”

~Wizard of Oz

It’s been turning out to be a fascinating year for me in regards to releasing old stories and making space for new stories to emerge. There is one story I’ve been watching unfold all year. This story has been presenting itself to me weekly regardless of where I am (US, Canada, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Connecticut, business discussions, personal discussions, strangers at Starbucks, etc.).

This story impacts myself, my friends, my customers (both personal and business). I haven’t spoken about this story because…lets be honest….

I’ve been avoiding it with a passion!

I kept hoping this white elephant story would go away and resolve itself. That this story would find someone else more suited to discuss the subject. What is this story? This story is around the subject of money and in particularly wealth.

Wealth Definition: abundance of valuable material possessions or resources
I’ve heard stories around the fear of…

  • making poor money decisions,
  • being poor and not having enough,
  • losing clients if my rates are too high,
  • a culture that believes alternative healing services should be free (really!?!??),
  • having to settle for a passionless career because pursing a passion filled career would mean less money,
  • my dream won’t be able to support me!

All of these stories are coming from highly educated and successful business people. And all of these stories have one common thread…

The Scarcity Mentality Wealth Story

What is this story…

“They see life as having only so much, as though there were only one pie out there. And if someone were to get a big piece of the pie, it would mean less for everybody else. The Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production.”

~Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

The scarcity mindset revolves around the idea that there simply isn’t enough to go around. I knew there was a reason that these scarcity mindset stories have been showing themselves to me. So I’ve spent this year quietly paying attention, as I’ve personally felt like I’ve hit my own glass ceiling this year. With each story I was told, I sat with it, looked in the mirror, and asked myself…

Do I hold these same beliefs?

I didn’t think so, however at 8am on my birthday, I had a huge spiritual download/epiphany. I discovered that…

I had an unconscious hidden wealth story!

My own unconscious wealth story of wanting to follow the traditional path so that I would fit in, be like everyone else, and therefore be accepted. Because…

Isn’t that what we are suppose to do? Follow the traditional “safe” model in order to be accepted by our community and society?

I never knew that my unconscious wealth decisions have been around fitting in so that I would feel that I belonged and therefore would be accepted…no wonder why I hit the glass ceiling this year. It’s kind of hard to stand out when you are too busy trying to blend and fit in. Funny thing…once this old unconscious story became conscious and I took the steps to uncage the story, everything started to shift for me in unexpected ways. People started to support my approach. People started to tell me to start marketing myself. So I wrote 3 emails and from those 3 emails, I was asked to speak and participate on a business panel as part of a Supply Chain conference.

So this past week I flew to East Hartford Connecticut to sit on the business panel and speak in from of an audience of 60 business owners (each with sales of $30M+) about the supplier development collaboration services I offer as a business consultant. As various colleagues and joint business partners spoke, I could tell that the business owners in the audience were wearing their scarcity wealth hats and thinking that this was just another flavor of the year from my corporate sponsor in order to take more profit out of their pockets. When a business owner inquired about how this “gold status program” would help him to get better pricing (and more of the pie), I finally stopped playing the traditional “safe” model and instead I grabbed the microphone and started to speak about the white elephant in the room. I spoke about the ROI (return on investment) of my services. I spoke about the paradigm shift my collaboration services offer….shifting from a win/lose model to a win/win model. Because lets face it, my corporate sponsor relies on these businesses, and if these business can’t make money, we all suffer and it ends up being a lose/loss. Talk about a business paradigm shift…

A shift from the scarcity mentality to the abundance mentality.

“The Abundance Mentality, on the other hand, flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. It opens possibilities, options, alternatives, and creativity.

~Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

After the event, I had several business owners come up to me and say…

You were the star of the panel! YOU SHINED!

Why am I telling you this story? As the year has unfolded, I have learned that everyone wants to pursue their dreams, turn their dreams into reality, and be profitable (whether it is a career, a hobby, or a business). However, for some of you, whether you recognize it or not, there is an old unconscious wealth story holding you back and stopping you from shining. Based on my own experiences, I have created a new 1-on-1 program for those of you that are ready to…

Red Flags, Roadblocks, and Barriers

“When the Universe gives you a firm “NO”, say “Thank You”. The Universe has bigger plans for you!”

~Robin Rosenstiel

For the past few months, I’ve been making lists of in-person and on-line workshops that I would like to offer. However whenever I move forward with implementing my plans….

Uncanny roadblocks and challenges keep arising

For some reason, things aren’t aligning no matter HOW much effort I put in. I keep coming across roadblocks and barriers in the form of time constraints which prevent me from getting where I want to go. When I take a step forward, something happens which causes me to take two steps back. All of my struggling and fighting just doesn’t seem to be paying off.

It’s almost getting comical.

This week I took a step back and I’ve really started to pay attention to the red flags, roadblocks and barriers. Instead of tracking an animal, I’ve been tracking which activities flow forward and which activities stop dead in their tracks. With each activity that is red flagged, roadblocked or barricaded, I ask myself…

Is it just not the right time (my time vs divine time)?

Is it the right path but the wrong direction?

Or is it simply the wrong path?

Historically I would just push forward with my plans determined to make it work. Sometimes the end results were worth the struggles and sometimes I should have stopped the minute the red warning flags appeared. So this time, I’m going to try a new approach. I’m going to breathe deeply and thank the Universe for alerting me and ask to be shown the next steps I need to take because I have no clue. I will be traveling for business this week, so watch my Facebook feed this week and watch what comes up, as it could be rather interesting (or not?!?!?)  So at this point, all I can say is…

I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m sure it will be an adventure!

In the meantime, listen to my newest sound meditation to help you uncover the real reason life is throwing up red flags, roadblocks, and barriers.

Chasing Shiny Objects

“Make good use of your talents and resources. Give thanks for the bounty that surrounds your life now.”

Recently I was in northern Michigan at a manufacturing plant. We were taking a 10 minute break from a meeting and I decided to look out the window. As I watched a flock of wild turkeys walk through the parking lot, I noticed one turkey stop and stare at a brand new shiny black car. The wild turkey started to attack the shiny black car. He started to peck at the door and then proceeded to walk around the entire car and peck it. I told everyone to come to the window. We all laughed because even we could see the turkey’s reflection in the shiny black car. One gentleman in the group pointed out the lesson of:

Don’t keep your car too shiny clean!

Well, I don’t know about you, but washing my car isn’t my strong suit in life! But watching that turkey really got me thinking about where and why I chase shiny objects in my own life. Looking back over my life. I have chased after having the…

▪ right clothes ▪ right lifestyle ▪ right career ▪ right relationship ▪ right business

This year I’ve been paying close attention to what drives my choices (especially my bad choices). Whenever I’m having a bad day and feeling down on myself, I notice that my TV and Social Media feeds start reminding me that…

  • I’m not wearing the right clothes!
  • I’m not making enough money!
  • I’m not successful enough!
  • I’m not in a love relationship!
  • I’m not moving fast enough with my business!

With all of these messages continually being sent to myself and everyone else daily, it’s no wonder that we all feel like we live in a world of “SCARCITY”. I was even reviewing a potential well known On-Line Marketing Program this past week and one module was specially focused on promoting the use of the Scarcity Marketing Model to tell people that time is running out and they need to act now!

What does Turkey energy/medicine have to do with the “Scarcity” model that is so prevalent in our TV and Social Media feeds these days?

This is the shadow side of Turkey energy/medicine….Not Enough

Focusing on accumulating material belongings as a way to seek happiness instead of being grateful and feeling content with what we have and seeking happiness from within.

What triggers you to chase after shiny objects?

The next time you have an urge to purchase something, ask yourself “Is scarcity making my purchasing decisions or abundance?”

Listen to my newest sound meditation to help you whenever you get in a “Not Enough” funk.

Fun with Biker Bars, Wing Gongs, and Zebra Medicine

“Never water yourself down just because someone can’t handle you at 100 proof.”

This past week has taken an interesting turn – one I never saw coming. It started out last Sunday when a friend and I decided to go see Mr. Ed (a local band) at a bar we had never been at before. After we parked the car and started walking to the patio of the bar, we realized that it was a biker bar. Since the event was going to be outside on a deck under a canopy of trees and next to a river, we figured “why not, its a beautiful day and this should be interesting!” And interesting it was…I must admit, that Sunday afternoon was the most entertaining afternoon I had in a long time. It was refreshing being surround by people just being 100% themselves. So often we are taught to be like everyone else, to hide parts of ourselves for fear of being excluded from the group because we are different.

Zebra Medicine #1 – Blending into a crowd without losing your individuality is one powerful aspect of Zebra.

Sunday evening I decided to sign up for a 2019 Gong Yoga Workshop in Toronto. During our phone conversation, I mentioned my weekend activities of purchasing a Wind Gong and visiting a biker bar. When I opened the email receipt the following note was added:

Glad to chat more this evening! Yay, sounds like you are having fun with biker bars and wind gongs – haha, that is a fun sentence I just wrote!

Zebra Medicine #2 – Surround yourself with those that encourage you and support you.

Friday, during a bi-weekly business conference call, I spoke about the Gong Workshop that I had attended earlier in the month. After a few giggles, I was asked if I could do a sound meditation at our next on-site meeting. I was totally shocked by the request. Can this be true? Is Corporate America really ready for sound healing?

Zebra Medicine #3 – Teaches us that the steps we take each day is part of the great journey of making our dreams a reality.

Are you ready to experience Zebra medicine in action this week? Have you been struggling to resolve an issue? I have created a sound meditation for you to check out.

Zebra Medicine – Let Go and Trust Sound Meditation

This sound meditation helps you to solve a problem that you are struggling with. Zebra medicine teaches you to stop pushing your way through obstacles and instead to relax and let the solution present itself. Check it out and let me know what you think and what solutions present themselves to you.

Sitting With The Question

“If you’re in a hurry, slow down, sit in the questions.”
~Byron Katie

As the summer is coming to a close and the feel of fall is in the air, I decided to flip through the pages of my summer journal. Pages filled with words, pictures, and doodles I’ve journaled for years as it is my “go to” tool that I use to connect to my heart and my dream daily. This summers’ journal reflected the crazy ebb and flow of this summer. Moments of go-go-go followed by moments of stop-stop-stop. As I reviewed the pages, I noticed that …

My biggest insights and AHA moments were always during the stop-stop-stop moments.

Ideas for new workshops and on-line classes filled the pages. As I review all of the ideas, I found myself asking the question…

  • What if it could be easy?
  • What if there was nothing to fear?
  • What if I took 1 step forward daily into the unknown?
  • What if I showed up more authentic and wholehearted?

What is your WHAT IF question?

Are you ready to start transforming your life?
