Living in a Week of Should {Finding Joy in the Journey}

“There are two paths in life: should and must. We arrive at this crossroads over and over again. And every day, we get to choose.”

~Elle Luna

Monday AM as I drove to Rockford in the fog, I was stopped by a red stop light at Route 20 and Pecatonica Road. As I waited for the light to change from red to green, I watched a small field mouse dance across 4 lanes of highway unhurt. I was fascinated with how the mouse moved so I googled Mouse Spirit Animal and though…

WOW…I think I might need some mouse power this week!

I posted the Mouse Spirit Animal picture and link on Facebook and my dear friend Sue responded…

It’s all in your dance moves! I learned this back in the 70s watching Soul Train!

I laughed and responded…

Wonder when I will need to slip into dancing mode this week?

So here I am Friday morning, reflecting back on…

A Week Filled With Should!

A week filled with people telling me where I “should” be living, what I “should” be doing with my life, and why I “should” be doing it. In the past I would have gotten angry and defensive, but this time around I stopped and took in each “should” with curiosity. I leaned into each “should” and tested it out with body sensations and the shackles on/shackles off approach.

Should I be living in a different town? So I had coffee at the local coffee shop and checked it out. The coffee shop was filled with some interesting people and it’s walkable from potential houses that are for sale. I always wanted to be able to walk to a coffee shop vs. having to drive every where. My body felt relaxed and happy and it felt shackles off.

Should I buy a house in a different town? I scheduled a walk through of a house. By the end of the walk through, I felt like I had just walked in a complete circle as every room had 2 doors (plus there were 2 staircases). I left feeling dizzy and overwhelmed as thoughts of should vs must filled my head. I couldn’t even tell you if it felt shackles on or shackles off as my body was on sensory overload.

The “what I should be doing” and “why I should be doing it” conversations throughout the week gave me indigestion, heartburn, and a major headache. Every one of these conversations felt totally shackles on, or better yet, like a noose around my neck!

And the most fascinating observation about the Week of Filled with Should? Not once was I asked…

  • Does this make my heart happy?
  • How do I feel about this?
  • How would I like to proceed?

Instead the week was filled with one-sided conversations around other people’s expectations of how they want me to live my life. Isn’t that interesting? I didn’t realize it was my job to live my life based on others’ expectations.

Today as I typed this blog post, I reflected back on the mouse that danced across 4 lanes of highway on Monday and realized that I have also learned to dance in the world of “should”.

A general note about Chakra Health
You are constantly interacting with and responding to the world around you. So are your chakras. Practices that help clear and rebalance the chakras are never a “once and done” activity. Just as you would not expect your body to remain clean forever after one shower, your chakras are not going stay clear forever after one meditation, one yoga, or one Reiki session. On-going energetic self-care plays is essential for overall chakra health and well-being.
