Life Lessons From a 93 Year Old Building

“If this building could talk, there would be a lot of swearing involved!”
~Robin Rosenstiel

2 weeks ago during my 2nd floor Spring Cleaning frenzy I mentioned to a friend (who is a contractor) how I hated my staircase (93 years of dirt, grim, glue, various finishes, etc.) and regretted not having Lenny (my contractor 9 years ago) restore it when he offered. There is a story behind my decision 9 years ago – lets just say that after a summer of remodeling the 2nd floor apartment of my 1926 hardware store, I simply got tired of Lenny’s lack of vision.
So Tuesday night when I returned home at 11pm from a 7 day business trip to Montreal and Quebec City (leading business Continuous Improvement/Lean Assessments), imagine my surprise when I saw my large staircase (which separates the workshop space from my apartment space) stripped down to the original wood.

My 1st thought…WOW that looks amazing!

My 2nd thought …WOW – only someone really frustrated and angry would take the time to do strip this staircase!

Wednesday I got the rest of the story that confirmed my 2nd thought. As a Transformational Coach and Mentor for Businesses and Individuals, I was fascinated by the story and the reaction it created. What was the story?

It’s the first step on the staircase to transformation (how poetic).

It’s the same story I’ve repeated in my own life, time and time again. It’s the story behind why I purchased a 1926 hardware store. It’s the story behind why I moved to Toronto. It’s the story behind why I moved back to Kent. It’s the story behind why I became a Transformational Coach and Mentor.

It’s the story where you stop ignoring the red flags, stop denying the situation, and instead accept the facts. It’s the story where you re-evaluate/determine your values and draw a line in the sand and say…

I’M DONE!!!”

Needless to say, the building is coming out of “hibernation mode” and it’s dragging me along kicking and screaming. I had other plans this past weekend. I was going to focus on developing an on-line workshop for Restore.Rebalance.Refocus. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to put it on the back burner. Nothing like 93 years of dust and dirt messing havoc with your sinuses. Let’s be serious – no one is going to want to watch a video series of someone, coughing, wheezing and sneezing. Instead I had to refocus my efforts on picking out paint colors for my staircase walls and cleaning up the Kent Emporium web site. So stay tune for more information about the on-line experience!

And for those in the area, join me on Sunday March 31st for a workshop at the Kent Emporium as we prepare for Spring. Details below.
