Whac-A-Mole Week

“If I manage to survive the rest of the month, I would like my straight jacket in hot pink and my helmet to sparkle.”

~Robin Rosenstiel

What is going on? I feel like the world is suddenly speeding up and everyone is trying to run faster and faster on the hamster wheel of life. Even Mother Nature is trying to play catch up and decided to jump from winter to summer in 1 day (from 40 Degrees to 80+ Degrees).
And with this suddenly urge for life to speed up, I’ve been experiencing the “adult” real life version of the Whac-A-Mole game. For those unfamiliar with the game, I found a description of the Hasbro Whac-A-Mole Game on Amazon:

The classic carnival game of Whac-A-Mole comes right into your house in this energetic and highly silly home version. The inherent cruelty of this game is tempered considerably by how much fun the moles appear to be having while receiving repeated blows to the head with big plastic mallets. It must help that each mole gets to wear a helmet, each a different color. One to four players can join in by whacking the critter in front of them during the “sign in” period at the beginning of the game. The object of the game, naturally, is to whack the moles as they pop up and players can choose to have them light up or not. Parents should be aware of course that they are giving big plastic mallets to very young children and the result will almost certainly be that one kid whacks another before too long. It’s just bound to happen. But if those energies can be re-directed toward the moles, this is a fun and silly way to play inside. –Charlie Williams

What does the “adult” version of Whac-A-Mole “look like…

The practice of repeatedly getting rid of something, only to have more of that thing appear.

My week was already filled with a pre-defined list of “To Do’s”, so imagine my surprise when the list started to grow leaps and bounds and everyone wanted every thing completed ASAP. Normally I would get very irritated over this, however this week I just stood back, observed, and laughed about the situation as I stated the mantra…

I’m a human being, not a human doing!

Let’s face it, we come from a culture which says “If I’m not always busy, I’m not accomplishing anything and I don’t feel valuable.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people bragging about “how busy” they are. They brag about how they work 7 days a week and put their personal needs on the back burner, as if they are expecting to win a trophy for their sacrifice. I hate to tell them this but…

Your worth is not related to being too busy, too stressed and having a maximized schedule. Your worth, your value comes from within and is something that is there no matter how much you “produce” or get done in a day.

So this weekend, take a deep breath and let yourself off of the hook. Don’t try to accomplish everything, because it’s impossible to get it all done. Celebrate not getting it all done because you have finally realized you can’t and you’re not supposed to. Instead, focus on doing things that bring you joy, because that is what life is truly about. If you want to live a life of joy, you have to give joy room to grow in your life. If you are constantly doing, doing and doing, you are not cultivating room for joy, for happiness and for love in your life. A joyful life doesn’t have to be stressed, overworked and underpaid life. So this is my prescription to you…

Take time this weekend to focus on what brings you joy.

Are you stuck in the” human doing” story?
Are you ready to start flexing your joy muscles?

If so, please join me at the upcoming workshop tomorrow (Saturday May 5th)…
