Your Should You Follow Your Dreams?

“Throw caution to the wind and just do it.”

~Carrie Underwood

For the past several weeks I’ve been questioning myself as to why I’m following my dreams. Not out of frustration, anger, or bitterness, but out of openness and curiosity. To give you an idea, this is what a usual work day looks like for me this summer…

  • 5:45am – wake up
  • 6-7am – Meditate and slow yin yoga
  • 7-8am – Work on my Fish Tank business plan
  • 8-12pm – Day Job
  • 12-1pm – Work on my Fish Tank business plan
  • 5-6pm – Yoga class, walk in nature, or exercise machine
  • 6-8pm – Dinner and relax
  • 8pm-9pm – Work on my Fish Tank business plan
  • 9pm-10pm – Unwind and watch a Netflix of Amazon Prime show

And when I travel during the work week for business the 5:45am becomes 4:45am, the lunch break becomes a working lunch break, and the dinners tend to stretch from 6-9pm….which leaves me even less time for my dreams. But I continue to march forward and chisel out time whenever possible during the work week so that I can focus my weekends on relaxing, having fun, and playing. Because one thing I have discovered over time, all work and no play leads to burnout.
Just recently I was asked to join a local Business Mastermind Group. This group meets once a month from 6am-7:30am on Saturday morning.

Yup…you read that right…Saturday 6AM!!!!

Prior to this months’ Mastermind Group, I was on the road from Monday – Friday. After being on the road for 5 days straight, all I wanted to do was sleep in on Saturday morning. However I decided to attend the meeting as I wanted to know…

Who goes to a meeting at 6am on Saturday morning?

So last Saturday, I woke up at 5am, left the house at 5:30am, with the goal of attending the meeting at 6am.

So am I passionate about following my dreams or just plan crazy?

Trust me! That is exactly what I was thinking as I was driving to Freeport IL at 5:30am. Funny thing, the universe does have a sense of humor as the main topic for Saturday’s meeting was…

Sacrifice and Commitment.

What was most interesting about the group discussion is that I found myself surrounded by others having the exact same thought as me…

Why do I do this? And am I the only one that is driven to do this?

After that meeting I decided to spend the weekend and create a list of what I have discovered while pursing my own dreams.
1. Dreams help me to develop faith

Following my dreams keeps me in touch with a childlike faith that believes the unbelievable, and sees the possible in the seemingly impossible.

2. Dreams keep me from being risk averse

Following my dreams have helped me to learn to trust, take risks, and be willing to step out of my comfort zone without fear of failure.

3. Dreams keep me unique

Following my dreams prevents me from simply fitting in just to fit in, going with the status quo, and becoming comfortable.

4. Dreams help me to change my perspective

Following my dreams helps me to acknowledge and appreciate the experience of past failures and value them as learning opportunities.

5. Dreams keep me thinking big

Following my dreams helps me to identify and overcome the limiting beliefs that hinder me from reaching for the stars.

6. My dreams encourage me to take action

Following my dreams moves me from being a spectator in my own life to an actual initiator.

7. My dreams have given me the opportunity to show courage

Following my dreams have taught me to be comfortable with uncertainty.

8. My dreams have made me more motivated

Following my dreams have energized me and have given me a reason to get out of bed every morning (even when the day job sucks!)

9. Pursuing my dreams requires new learning

Following my dreams have helped me to develop new skills (example: coaching, blogging, web sites, on-line calendars, etc.) that have helped me both with my professional career and my starting my own business.

10. My dreams help others to pursue their dreams

Following my dreams has inspired others to step off of the sidelines of their own lives and to follow their own dreams.

So why are dreams so important?

Having a commitment to pursuing our dreams is healthy, not only for us, but for those around us. For when we pursue our dreams we’re more alive, vibrant, and hopeful of a better future.
When we look ahead in hope it inspires others and gives them permission to dream too.

Virtual Freedom Highway Road Trip

Here is where you can…
Redefine Yourself and Re-imagine Yourself

Prompt for the week: It’s been 2 months since we have started this journey together. Only 3 more weeks to go on this Road Trip and with Mercury Retrograde in full swing…it is going to get real interesting. With that said, let’s pause this week and hang out around the campfire. Ask yourself…

  • Where am I today vs. when I started this road trip 2 months ago?
  • Have my dreams shifted and changed?  Or have they remained the same?
  • Have my dreams turned into nightmares?  If so, what do I need to let go of?  Expectation? Time Lines? Commitments?  There is a fine line between nightmares and daydreams.
  • What do I need more of?

Please share your list on our private Facebook Group.

I will also be posting my road trip pictures at Instagram using #freedomhighway.
