Animal Messages At The Kent Emporium

rabit-v2

When you method of thinking isn’t producing results,

you must change the way you think.”

~Unknown

For the past week, I’ve been starting to focus on assembling my business plan for the Freeport Fish Tank competition. It’s not due until October, however, as we all know, time flies when you are having fun (especially in the summer). So for the past week, I have been asking myself…

What are the core values of the Kent Emporium?

By definition…

Core values reflect what is important to the organization and its members.

Funny thing, I got the answer to my question in the most unusual way. Since last Friday, I have had a new cast of characters showing up at the Kent Emporium.  Thanks in part to my wonderful assistant…Aslan the Cat and a dear friend Lisa (for craving me a gift). This new cast of characters include:

  • A frog,
  • A chipmunk,
  • A raccoon, (he has been showing up for a while),
  • A rabbit

Please Note: No animal was injured or killed even though they all were hanging out on the 2nd floor of the Kent Emporium.

So what does this have to do with anything? Sometimes answers come to us in the most unusual ways. Not the traditional linear way we were taught in school, but in the magical non-linear way. The Kent Emporium has historically been know for random animals appearing, however 4 unique animals over the course of 4 days showing up on the 2nd floor of my building was a bit extreme even for the me.

Wednesday night, as I laid in bed contemplating locking Aslan inside of the building for the rest of his life, I heard the frogs singing outside in-between the thunderstorms. And when I heard this, I finally got the message. I had been looking at my “zoo” experience from the wrong perspective. So I decide to look at the experience from a different perspective. Instead of locking Aslan inside of the building for the rest of his life, I decided that maybe all of these animals are trying to tell me something. So I googled and searched through my various spirit animal books and discovered the hidden meaning of each animal. What did I discover?

The Kent Emporium Core Values:

  • Cat: Celebrate being your authentic “unique self”
  • Frog: Catalyst for change and transformation while singing in the rain
  • Chipmunk: Adventure, play, and exploration
  • Rabbit: Explore the possibilities of what has captured your imagination
  • Raccoon: Be fearless and go after want you really want

WOW – that was easiest assignment ever. I didn’t have to do anything other than pay attention! Of course on Tuesday, I did ask Aslan to bring me a unicorn…sadly he did not, but my brother sent me one (below) on Thursday!

What are your core values?

Prompt for the week: As you drive down Freedom Highway, watch for the signs that appear. The signs can be animals running in front of you, random books jumping off of a shelf, dreams, funny license plates, etc. Ask yourself…

  • What was I thinking when this sign appeared?
  • What does the sign mean?
  • How does the sign help me solve my question?

Can you believe the Summer Solstice was this week? You know what that means….

OMG…the year is half over. AUGH!!!

I don’t know about you, but I personally felt like I was having a Charlie Brown moment this week. So I decided to take advantage of the Summer Solstice energy this week and review my intentions for the year and reflect on where I am  (as I have had a lot of changes in the past 6 months).

I decided that it is a time to look within myself and decide what I really want out of life.

This statement clearly describes the energy of this week.

New beginnings, changes, new ideas, and goals.

Now is a great time to get rid of old patterns that are no longer of use to you, to open new doors and set new goals. It is a time to look within yourself and decide what you really want out of life. We should all embrace the energy of this week and use the power of the solstice to assist us in growing and bettering ourselves. It is a time to celebrate not only ourselves but also those around us. It is a great time to celebrate rebirth and encourage change.

With this year’s summer solstice I encourage you to embrace a new beginning and let yourself blossom into a “new you”. To assist you, I have created a pocket guide to navigating the uncharted territory of creating an inspired path to bringing your gifts out into the world and making you shine.

As you look at the map, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Where are you now on the map?
  • What choice would you make it you really believed in your dream?
  • What would you do if everyone was cheering you on and no one was criticizing you?
  • What are you willing to commit to so that you can set your dream in motion?
  • What fears are you willing to face?
  • What does your soul want to create?

I would love to hear your answers to the questions above.
And if you are ready to move forward, please fill out the form and I will contact you to schedule a 20 minute “Discover” session to chart out your next inspired step.

Suitcase Stories

suitcase-stories

All journeys have a secret destination of which the traveler is unaware.”

~Josh Kletschka

Last Sunday I spent 1 hour reviewing what I would be packing in my suitcase for a week long business trip. As a seasoned traveler, I try to keep everything to a backpack and 1 carry-on suitcase. However due to the length of the trip and the clothes I was packing (not my usual blue jeans and t-shirts, but dress pants, skirts, shoes), I was struggling to pack every thing in without having to expand the zipper. And everyone who travels a lot knows that the same amount of clothes always seems to expand on the return trip. So I decided to select a larger suitcase which would require me to check the bag. Not a big issue, it just meant that I needed to wait for my luggage to magically appear at the baggage carousel. I arrived at 6pm EST on Sunday night at the Lansing Michigan airport. As soon as we landed and I turned on my phone, I had a received a text message from United that my luggage was delayed and as a result I needed to go to the United counter and a United representative would assist me.

I wasn’t thrilled with the text message, but it appeared that they had it covered as I did not have to wait at the baggage carousel and discover for myself that my bag was missing. So I approached the representative at the United counter who point blank told me that I had to return at 11pm (next flight arrival) in order to receive my bag. I questioned his response as usually the airlines will deliver your luggage to your destination. He was adamant that if I wanted my luggage before 7am on Monday, I must return and claim the luggage myself, as there would be no one to drive my luggage to the hotel at 11:30pm at night.

So I drove back to the Lansing Airport at 11pm (thank goodness the hotel was 10 minutes away), and I waited, and I waited. People arrived and left, luggage arrived and left, but my suitcase never appeared. I went to the United counter and no one was there. I spoke to a security guard who informed me to knock on the Delta door and someone would assist me. I knocked and a Delta representative came out. I explained the situation and the Delta representative walked over to the United counter and started reviewing the computer screen. He started making comments to me as he investigated my missing luggage. Comments like…

This is not normal.
I can’t believe this happened.

He finally printed and handed me a piece of paper and told me to start calling the number at 5am. He then asked me if I knew the name of the United person that originally assisted me or what he looked like as he wanted to write him up for being lazy and not doing his job. I was too tired to remember anything about the United representative, but it was refreshing to know that…

Someone had my back.

I went back to the hotel at 12am angry and exhausted. I did not sleep well as I knew I would be wearing blue jeans and converse shoes for my first appearance at this facility. I did not have an issue with my appearance, however old stories started popping into my head.

Old stories regarding…

  • I should of know better and took carry on luggage.
  • I should of spoke to the United representatives’ boss.
  • I should of blah…blah…blah…the list goes on and on.

Why did these old stores appear? Because I came from an…

old cultural story of blamers

Over the course of time I have been taught that even situations completely outside of my control are still my fault.  When I arrived at the facility Monday am and met the event organizer, I apologized for my attire and explained the situation. The response…

No Worries.

WOW…how refreshing. No one yelled at me, no one questioned me, no one criticized me, and no one blamed me. As the week went on and I went through extensive process control training, I learned a new cultural story….

We don’t blame people for events outside of their control!

WOW…I lost more than my physical luggage this week…

I lost an old suitcase story…
My tendency to blame myself for everything outside of my control, and then internally blame and beat myself up over it.

What old suitcase story do you carry with you?

If everyone had your back and no one criticized or blamed you, what would you do?

Prompt for the week: As we start out on our summer road trip, we are each allowed to bring 1 carry-on suitcase. What will you pack in your suitcase that reminds you of FREEDOM?

Being a seasoned traveler, I ask myself this question every time I pack. I have whittled down my list to the following essentials…

  • Several crystals to keep me grounded
  • Flower Essence to address potential energy imbalances as I travel
  • 1 small singing bowl for meditation
  • 1 pair of converse shoes…because I can hike in converse shoes
  • 1 pair of blue jeans
  • 2 t-shirts
  • 1 jacket for colder days
  • 1 pair of yoga pants
  • 1 pair of flip flops
  • 1 cell phone…to take pictures and to stay in contact with people
  • 1 computer…to blog, take on-line yoga classes, and watch Netflix

The rest of the space in my suitcase if for the interesting items I will pick up throughout the summer….whether it be new clothes, new accessories, or new memories.

Begin With The End In Mind

Begin with the end in mind. Start with the end outcome and work backwards to make your dream possible.”

Last Friday, in my blog Freedom Highway, I spoke about how cars have been a metaphor for my life lately. Funny that this model car (still in the original box) appeared on a hay wagon at my mothers’ farm auction last Saturday morning. So what did I do….

I GRABBED IT AND RAN!

Recognizing that this model car was not from my mothers’ collection, I ask my friend Dave, “Is this yours?”, before I smuggled it off to my car before the masses arrived at the auction. After the auction I found out from my friend Dave that he had collected these model cars over the years and as part of his own 2017 massive decluttering exercise, he decided to sell them at the auction.

What always fascinates me, and I see it time and time again as I coach clients, is the moment you 100% commit to a goal, serendipitous moments occur to let you know that you are on the right path.

Finding this model car with the crazy stickers on it, re-enforced how I want the summer to feel…

FULL OF FUN, EXCITMENT, AND ADVENTURE.

Has any image popped into your life this past week that represents what you want this summer to feel like?

Freedom Seekers Guide Summer 2017 Virtual Freedom Highway Road Trip

Here is where you can…
redefine yourself and re-imagine yourself

Every summer road trip starts with an end destination. And since the theme of our summer vacation is FREEDOM, we will start there.

Years ago, when I was living in England I stumbled across a 5 Rhythms year long dance meditation retreat program. My intention for joining the group was to meet new people and experience life in England. Every other month we would meet for 1 weekend in the Lake District. By the end of the program I discovered more than friends, I discovered what freedom means to me.

To me, freedom…

  • Smells like fresh air and freshly cut hay
  • Tastes like a latte and pecan cinnamon roll for breakfast
  • Sounds like singing birds, laughter and cracking bon fires
  • Looks like sunny days, starry nights, and open roads
  • Feels like adventure, whether it is in my own backyard or a foreign country

So what do you want freedom to look like at the end of your summer road trip?

This week I was in Hartford Connecticut picking up a computer and getting settled into a new position with a new company. This position appeared out of no where and turned out to be a perfect fit as it allows me to have an office based out of Kent while I travel to assess and recommend improvements to businesses. This position will offer me the opportunity to fine tune my “boots on the ground” technique for coaching and mentoring heart driven entrepreneurs and freedom seekers….WOOHOO!!!
As I picked up the rental car at the airport on Monday, I had to laugh as I could see…

The car is a metaphor for my life.

This is not the first time I have noticed that the car I was driving was a metaphor for my life. I first noticed the car metaphor playing out in my life in January of this year. I was in Fargo ND for a business trip. As my colleague drove the rental car to the plant, I sat in the passenger seat and watched her slide past 2 separate entrances in front of the plant. We both just laughed and figured it was due to the excessive snow and ice on the road. That evening as my colleague drove the rental car to the restaurant, she tapped on the brakes and the car proceeded to fish tailed down a ramp. When we arrived at the restaurant, I got out and looked at the tires and noticed the tires were bald. A brand new car with bald tires!?!?!? As the week, went on I learned what the car metaphor was telling me…

All that glitters is not gold.

Meaning….the software system we initially defined for the plant in early 2016, was reduced to a stripped down version by January due to strategic constraints. As a result, we were required to implement a system with minimal resources (people and equipment) to make it successful. Imagine purchasing a new car and having to put your old used tires on it in order to leave the dealers’ lot, because the price of the new car did not include new tires. I think you get the point.

So here I am in Hartford and I’m given a Ford Fusion Hybrid. I opened the door and it had:

  • leather seats
  • heated seats (it was cold in Hartford this week)
  • control panel of dials I’ve never seen before
  • push button starter
  • automatic seat location recall

I laughed because it took me 10 minutes to get through the basic controls just to get the car to a point where I could drive it off of the lot. Now this wasn’t a bad thing, it was just showing me that this summer I will be going outside of my comfort zone and will be stretching and growing.
Of course at this point, you must be thinking…

“Since Robin has a new job, will she be pulling out of Fish Tank and stop her coaching and mentoring?”

The answer….HELL NO!

This new position is just my next step on Freedom Highway. Don’t get me wrong, I did spent every night this week in my hotel room questioning myself with the big…

Why do I want to continue down this path?

And my response: Because I want to live an extraordinary life.

Why? Because I want the freedom to live life on my own terms.

Why? Because I want to follow my dreams.

Why? Because I want to listen to my heart vs. following a path someone else thinks I should be on.

Why? Because I want to be true to me!

And there it is…my big “WHY” behind why I do what I do….

I want to follow my dreams, listen to my heart, and be true to me!

And as a result, my coaching and mentoring business is following the same path…

I want to assist heart based entrepreneurs and freedom seekers who also want to follow their dreams, listen to their hearts, and be true to themselves.

So I thought…what better way to kick off the summer than to go on a virtual freedom highway road trip with everyone. Weekly, via my blog, I will post the next weeks’ adventure prompt. What makes this such a great road trip is that you can pick and choose which adventure prompts you want to participate in. Details below.
